02  /  05  —    FEEDING THE COMMUNITY

When the wanpot table sets, no one eats alone.

Wi na wan.

From communal cookouts in Texas to relief shipments back home — we cook for one another, and we cook for those who can’t.

03  /  05  —    SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Twelve children. One school year.

Tenki ya.

We send junior secondary pupils in Regent, Waterloo, and York to class each year — uniforms, books, fees, and the backpack to carry it all.

04  /  05  —    HEALTH INITIATIVES

Blood pressure. Hard conversations. Care.

Kushe.

Every year, chapter doctors and friends run free clinics in Freetown — screenings, counselling, and the supplies our relief shipments deliver.

05  /  05  —    UPCOMING EVENTS

Come gather with us.

Padi.

The annual reunion. The thanksgiving service. The scholarship gala. Three dates that bring the chapter together every year — and you’re welcome at each.

Our work

Reflection, education, charitable giving.

Three pillars guide every gathering, every dollar raised, every scholarship awarded.

01  ·  Reflection

Remember Freetown.

We hold thanksgiving services, language sessions, and storytelling nights so the next generation knows where we are from — and why.

02  ·  Education

Send a child to school.

Scholarships fund junior secondary pupils in Regent, Waterloo, and York — uniforms, books, fees, and a backpack to carry it all.

03  ·  Giving

Lift the village.

From the Dream Home orphanage to community clinics, we partner with local groups to fund what Sierra Leone tells us it needs.

Upcoming

Come gather with us.

Every event is open to family, friends, and curious neighbours. Bring a dish.

The cotton tree, Freetown — under whose roots our story begins.

Descendants of Freetown, planted in Texas.

The Krios of Sierra Leone are descendants of freed African-American, West Indian, and Liberated African people who, between 1787 and 1885, founded the colony of Freetown. They built schools, churches, and a language — Krio — that is now spoken by hundreds of thousands.

KDU Texas is the Texas chapter of Krio Descendants Union Global. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in Carrollton. In 2008, this chapter hosted what would become the annual KDU Family Reunion — and we have been gathering ever since.

“Le we hep we sef.”

When we send a uniform to a child in Regent, we are not remembering charity. We are remembering that the village raised every one of us — and now it is our turn to raise the village.
