Sierra Leone — bordered by Guinea to the north and Liberia to the south, with the Atlantic to the west — is the home our members or our families came from. Freetown, founded in 1792 by formerly enslaved Africans who had been freed by the British and resettled from Nova Scotia, Jamaica, and the West African coast, is the historic heart of the Krio community.
Places that come up
- Freetown — the capital, and the historic Krio homeland.
- Bo, Kenema, Makeni — the major towns of the provinces, where the chapter’s scholarship recipients often study.
- The Western Area Peninsula — the beaches and fishing villages south of Freetown.
- Tiwai Island — a wildlife sanctuary in the south, one of the country’s natural treasures.
Photographs from chapter members and the chapter’s archive will be added here as the gallery is built out.
