PROGRAMS — SYMPOSIUM

The Akinola Wyse Symposium.

An annual lecture series in the Krio intellectual tradition — talks, panels, and conversation on heritage, history, and the future of the diaspora.

Named for the eminent Sierra Leonean historian Akintola J. G. Wyse — author of The Krio of Sierra Leone and a foundational figure in Krio studies — the symposium is the chapter’s flagship intellectual gathering.

The format

The symposium is held once a year, usually in conjunction with the family reunion. Past sessions have featured Krio scholars, diaspora historians, journalists, and chapter elders. Topics have ranged from 19th-century Krio commerce in the Niger Delta to contemporary diaspora politics to Krio music and literature.

Open to all

Members, friends, and the broader public are welcome. There is no fee. Light refreshments are usually served. Watch the Events page for the next session, or email board@kduoftexas.org to propose a speaker or topic.
